Grade 1:

•  Writing

  • Overall Expectations:

    • generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience;

  • Specific Expectations:

    • 3.2 spell unfamiliar words using a variety of strategies that involve understanding sound-symbol relationships, word structures, and word meanings (e.g., segment words to identify and record individual sound-symbol correspondences, including short vowels and simple long-vowel pat- terns; listen for rhyming patterns; look for common letter sequences and onset and rime in frequently used words; make analogies between words that look similar; illustrate words to link meaning to spelling)

  • Activity Idea:

    • Using the printmaking technique you were able to create four different cats. What names did you choose for each cat?

    • There are a lot of words that rhyme with cat - how many can you think of?

    • Write down all the words you can and see if you can use them to write a short story about the cats in your picture.

Grade 3:

•  Number Sense and Numeration

  • Overall Expectations:

    • solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of single- and multi-digit whole numbers, using a variety of strategies, and demonstrate an understanding of multiplication and division.

  • Specific Expectations:

    • solve problems involving the addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers, using a variety of mental strategies (e.g., to add 37 + 26, add the tens, add the ones, then combine the tens and ones, like this: 30 + 20 = 50, 7 + 6 = 13, 50 + 13 = 63);

  • Activity Idea:

    • Printmaking is a really neat form of art because it allows you to duplicate (copy) the same image multiple times. You created a piece of art with 4 cats on it. But imagine if you had to create a piece of art with 1000 cats on it?

    • Now pretend you need to make 150 prints. On the first day of printing you create 67 prints, and on the second day you make 71. How many do you need to make on the 3 day to complete all 150 prints?

    • Try solving the problem using mental math, and then check your answers using a pencil and paper.

Grade 6:

•  Writing

  • Overall Expectations:

    • generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience;

  • Specific Expectations:

    • identify the topic, purpose, and audi- ence for a variety of writing forms (e.g., an original poem, with an invented structure or based on a model such as a haiku, about a topic of personal interest, to share with the class; a persuasive letter asking the school principal to look at a specific issue from a new point of view; a description of the pro- cedure for constructing a three-dimensional model, to share with Grade 3 students; a script on a topic of current interest for a mock television broadcast for a general audience)

  • Activity Idea:

    • Using your artwork, convince the people in your house that owning four cats is a good idea. Research everything it requires to take care of a cat and create a convincing argument. Remember, you are persuading your family that having four cats would be good - not just one!
